ABOUT CARLOS PEREZ


Carlos is a dedicated educator, nonprofit leader, storyteller, and DJ with a dynamic career spanning over 27 years in public education and a deep-rooted passion for music, culture, and community empowerment. As an educational leader and advocate for equity and opportunity, he has worked tirelessly to create transformative learning experiences for students and communities. Most recently, he served as the Executive Director of an educational nonprofit in Miami Beach, where he focused on expanding access to quality education and advocating for underrepresented voices.

A first-generation college graduate and the proud son of immigrant parents, Carlos understands firsthand the power of education, perseverance, and opportunity. His journey from a family of three brothers to achieving academic and professional success has been driven by resilience, gratitude, and a commitment to giving back. He holds a Doctoral Degree from Northeastern University, a Master’s Degree from Hofstra University, a Bachelor’s Degree from Long Island University, and an Associate’s Degree from Suffolk Community College.

Beyond education, he has made his mark in the world of music and entertainment as DJ Los the Scholar. His illustrious DJ career includes spinning at some of New York City’s most iconic venues, such as the Copacabana, Latin Quarter, The Tunnel, Club Capri, and Madison Square Garden. He has worked with renowned recording artists, including T.I., Chris Brown, Ginuwine, Big Pun, Fat Joe, Gloria Gaynor, Kool & The Gang, and Debbie Gibson. His ability to blend storytelling, culture, and music has allowed him to connect with diverse audiences both inside and outside the classroom.

When he is not writing, advocating for education, or behind the turntables, Dr. Perez enjoys traveling, spending time with his family, and coaching his son’s travel baseball team. His debut novel, The Other Road," reflects his passion for storytelling, his roots as a first-generation American, and his belief in the transformative power of choice, community, and hope. Whether through education, music, or writing, Carlos continues to inspire, uplift, and create a lasting impact in every space he enters.

Carlos lives in Florida with his wife, Cindy. They have raised 4 incredible kids and enjoy traveling and seeing the world.
